no t free but Apple has soundtrack which comes with Final cut studio and that is awesome!
I recommend 2 programs:

1) Acoustica - it's a free-trial music editor. Very effective, but somewhat complex for the newcomer.

2) Audacity - this freebie app is probably what you're looking for. Takes some time to learn to use but not nearly as complex as Acoustica.

Just so you know, Audacity can only record in .wav and .ogg. It can encode in .mp3 after installing a lame.dll that it'll point you toward.

You can't generate "random" numbers using only computation, but you can generate numbres which are "almost" random. One method for doing this, very simple and easy to implement, is called the linear-congruential method. Look it up.
Good random number generators are hard to find. I suggest that you make sure to include Donald Knuth in your searches.

But if you can get some of their baby pictures, it's not too hard to merge two pictures into something like what you're looking for. If you're willing to spend a little money, there are some online artists or photoshop manipulators (an art all in itself, of course) that would probably do something for you for a small fee.

As a commercial contractor I can tell you, it varies state by state. Why don't you call a qualified "ALREADY LICENSED" commercial contractor to do the work? A standby generator is usually "started up" (programmed) by the generator manufacturer after the contractor installs. Some contractors are certified by these manufacturers to do the start up also.

People in the general public, are usually NOT qualified to do this work. If your goal is saving money, think twice, it could cost you more money(damage to generator) AND the safety of those working with this equipment.

Cooking oil is 10-20 times more viscous (heavier) than diesel. Therefore, trying to atomize cooking oil through the same injector made for the diesel will be like trying to spray butter through the nozzle of a perfume sprayer.

This viscosity problem has to be overcome first. It has been discovered that vegetable oil will achieve viscosity similar to diesel at temperatures of 160 F and higher. Therefore, a mechanism will have to be installed that will heat up the oil to above 160 F before being atomized through the same injector.

Secondly, oil tends to polymerize (turn black and stick) when heated slowly from room temperature. The operating temperature of the oil is 180 F. It means that, if the system is at 180 F and oil "straight from the pan" is introduced to the system, it will not polymerize. Now that it's established oil WILL burn in a diesel engine, the next thing to consider is will the engine run well--meaning as efficiently as if proper fuel was used. [It will take more oil to move the vehicle 10 miles at 50mph than it would take diesel to do the same work.]

The answer: Not likely--and I wouldn't want the rebuild costs after I had done it to the engine.

Obviously, the more w, the more power -- but BE SURE TO CHECK out the transfer ability when the power comes back on! Some generators must be manually switched off and on, and if the power comes back when the generator is still on, you can blow the generator AND your electrical box!

Electric heat uses alot of current.Go big unless your going to power up your oil furnace with it.Just the element to boil water uses close to 1000w
Check with each appliance and add up the total watts.

100 watt light bulb (but you could use a compact fluorescent light that uses 18 watts)

Hot plate - I am guessing 750 watts (or a small microwave oven at 500 watts)

TV - depends on size, whether it is the conventional type with a glass tube, or an LCD, plasma or DLP. 200 watts and above.

You would be better off with a 2300 watt generator if you have the higher powered appliances.
At least with the 2300w, you can run a coffee pot.

A 20 amp circuit will handle 1600 watts,so buying a 2300 watt generator would be more than your circuit could handle. Electrical appliances such as tv,electric cooking stove ,convection ovens,toaster ovens electric fry pans,electric heaters all draw large amount of watts around 800 to 1200 watts by themselves,so running 2 or more at once would be taxing your circuit and possiable burned wires along with circuit breakers tripping constantly. I would contact your public service department they can give you better info and save you from a dangerous situation.

If you think you might be out for a few days you might want to consider the refrigerator. Throwing away the entire contents can be expensive and smelly.

Anything with a motor will pull 3x it's normal power when starting. This is the peak power he was talking about. If you are going to have several things with motors (add the TV to that list) you should make sure that you have room for that surge.

As a point of comparison a hair dryer on high is about 1500w. That would be enough to kill the 1,000w unit all by itself. Your plug in hot plate or microwave will also be pulling a lot of power. Anything to do with heat and cold uses a lot of power.

You might want a few compact fluorescent lamps in the house for lighting. They give 100w of light for 18w of power.

I am building a generator with a 18hp Briggs an stratton engine but I need an alternator. I want to get as many watts out of this as I can. The 8000 or 10000 watt portable generators that you can buy at lower or sears use a 15hp Briggs engine so I no I can produce the same with mine. Cheap and simple solution:

Use a good 1.5Volt battery, connect a 2.7KOhm 1% fixed resistor, and a linear 100 Ohm potentiometer in series across the battery.

It can be a reasonably good random generator for the last digit, but you will probably not be random much beyond the hundredth of a second. You can test this by doing a large number of samples (e.g. 1000 or so) to see if you have a reasonable distribution of numbers. (I did this on an old HP45 and found it was missing a digit!)

i know that tractor supply company carries solar panels but they are not high producing. each set cost around 300 bucks not including the batteries. I'm going to use complete solar energy for my house. i figured that it would take 3 sets of solar panels from tsc. each set using 4 marine batteries would cost 2500 to 3000 bucks and it would produce enough power run my most basic energy needs. as far as wind mills i haven't checked that idea out yet but i will soon enough. i hope that you find what you need. good luck.

An 800 watt microwave is rated to deliver 800 W output to heating the food. The input could easily be more than twice that. I just looked at my 600 W microwave and found the rated input is 1.45 kW. In addition, a lot of microwaves have a high inrush current that lasts for a fraction of a second when they are started. Your two 800 W microwaves could be pushing your generator to what is supposed to be its limit and it may not be quite up to delivering what it is supposed to deliver.

What kind of automatic transfer switch do you have? Does it have a built-in loadcenter (panel)? Is it a weatherproof one with a built-in main breaker?

Depending on the brand of generator that you have, this will probably not be a DIY project. Generac generators comes with very good DIY installation instructions for their 7kW - 16kW generators. They prefer to have their larger generators installed by a professional.

If your transfer switch has a built-in loadcenter (panel), I recommend installing it right next to your existing breaker box. You need to install a conduit between your transfer switch and generator. In this conduit, you will run your 2 - hots, 1-neutral and 1-ground for the power from the generator. Additionally, depending on the requirements, you need to install a minimum of 2 conductors that sense utility power and allow the generator to start.

The conduit size depends on the size of wire and number of conductors in the conduit. The wire size is determined from the generator size. All of these specifications should be in your installation instructions.

You also need to install a conduit between your transfer switch and existing breaker box. In this conduit, you need the utility power to feed the transfer switch and the circuits that you want your generator to control during an outage. These circuits are already in your existing breaker box, you just need to transfer them into your transfer switch.

Don't forget to ground your generator. The instructions will have the specifications for grounding. Typically, you need to drive an 8' x 5/8" ground rod next to the generator and connect a #6 bare copper wire between the ground rod and a lug provided on the generator's frame.

As I mentioned earlier, this is not really a DIY project. If you are unsure of any of the steps involved, I highly recommend hiring a licensed electrician. If you are going to do this yourself, definately get an inspection when you are done, just to be sure.

Be sure to check with your local building codes to see if they have any additional requirements. I also recommend getting the 2005 edition of the NEC and read Article 445.

To do this safely and up to code, you need a licensed electrician to do this. If you do it wrong you could have a fire or hurt someone in you local utility. Then you will be liable.

You should really have an electrician do the installation. Gilchristelectric gave a long explanation but didn't mention anything about grounding. Depending on if the transfer switch switches the neutral or not you have a separately derived system (SDS) or not, and the grounding is different between the two. If you screw it up, it is dangerous. Even electricians can find the rules for transfer switches and generators confusing. This is not a DIY job.
As everyone is eluding to, if you dont completely understand this switch, then its time to call an electrician. Its not worth damaging something or yourself.

The advice to hire someone competant should be taken seriously. This is not something you should do unless you are entirely familiar with the workings of electrical systems.

I'm not sure what a portacabin is. Likely a different term used in these parts of the woods. You should install some sort of electrical panel, similar to one in a house. If there is a main feed from the electrical utility and you plan to use the generator as an emergency backup power source you should install a transfer panel. The neutral / ground bond should occur at one location only. This is usually in the main distribution panel. There seems to be no standard for portable generators in this matter. Some manufacturers supply a bonded neutral, others leave it floating. The system should be grounded, again usually at the main distribution panel.

Even if you opt to hire an electrician, knowing and understanding what is being done is beneficial. You'll be in a better position to tell if the electrician is full of BS or if he truly knows what he is doing. I've seen far too many electricians advise people in a terribly irresponsible manner and do unacceptably shoddy work. Do your research and ask questions.

As a licensed electrician I feel obligated to advise you to have someone qualified do the work for you. Electricity is not like plumbing. I am totally in agreement with the first two answers. A licensed electrician who is also knowledgeable on Emergency Generator Sets is who you will want to trust to hook up this product. You will also need to contact your utility company to find out what they require as far as interfacing / separating the two circuits --- Normal and Emergency. Judging from the loads listed, if you are careful with loading on the generator you could get by easily with a 5kW generator.

If you are serious about doing this properly and safely, install a proper transfer panel. You may be able to add a few extra circuits and connection could be as easy as throwing a switch.

You have to add up the wattages. Forget the chargers; add a couple hundred watts for the other small stuff, add the wattages of the lights (use CF to save), add 1500 for the iron and (?) maybe 3000 for the hw heater. The last one is the killer. 5 kW might do it, or not. 5 kW is a reasonable home unit, might meet your criterion. 7.5 or 10 kW are also available, but now you're into a fairly large and expensive range.
This is what you need.

Option one.

If you are going to use every thing atonce then you need to read the sticker on the product and add all the wattage.

Then buy some thing that is about 20% more, buy what you need, if you need a refregerator to add to the line then plan on it also.

Generators come in all sizes, so the choice is yours.

Option two.

You will find that major items are only two, Iron that you use less then a hour a day and water heater depends, may stay on all the time and/or come on, on demand, if it has a hot water storage tank on it.

You need to shop around for the kind and type of generator, if you are going to hook it up to the present lines then you will need compatible automatic switching to isolate it and shut the generator down, or make it come on on demand, as needed, may need other protective equipment to prevent damage to the wiering and the house or apartment.
The water heater requires 4000 to 6000 watts at 240 volts depending on recovery time, the iron 1500, and every thing else about 1500 for a total of 7000 or 9000 watts. The Honda EB11000 would be adequate if some what large (400lbs).

Consider using a propane water heater. Then a 3000watt generator would be OK. - Honda EU3000 at 150bs.

I live 30 miles east of Seattle in an area that is frequently without power. Up until this year the outages were less than 48 hours but this year we have had repeated outages, one of which lasted 6 days after a stronger than usual windstorm. I had to scramble to find somewhere else to be. I lost several days of work, all the food in my refridgerator and freezer. At what point does it make sense to just install a standby generator?

They are really worth it. If you have the money put in an automatic type. If you have natural gas or propane use that for fuel it will save having to fuss with gasoline or diesel fuel.

I live in the city but still have a 5000 watt gasoline one I can hook up to the furnace, a couple of lights and the freezer. We had power out for about 14 hours during a ice storm and it worked great. but I had to keep refuelling it every 5 hours or so.

If you can afford it and maintain it, yes.
You definitely should install a generator. I think power outages have gotten worse and they happen more often. Also the piece of mind you get by having the generator is worth quite a bit. I would make sure to get enough power so that you could run a heat source and if you have well water, enough to power that too. $500 will buy a 5000 watt generator.
I decided to have a portable generator with manual transfer panel while my new house was being built. It uses a deep well for water, and without electricity we can't even flush a toilet! Within three months of moving in there was a 16 hour outage following a snow storm. Then a hurricane knocked power out for a few days. Otherwise power has been relatively reliable. Even so, I'd never want to be without the generator again. It is very good peace of mind and money well spent. I don't have to worry about my family being cold or not being able to eat. If you have to ask the question, it is time to do something about backup power.
